Volunteer to go inside the prison to teach discipleship. During this time you would work directly with offenders in small discipleship groups. This is an opportunity to live out the Gospel and visit those in prison. Volunteers should most importantly have a relationship with Jesus and also a heart for "the least of these". Volunteers should also be nonjudgmental, honest, reliable, and consistent. Consistency and reliability are key to prison ministry as you may be the only visitor or contact with the outside world that some of the offenders ever see.
Volunteers are required to go through Mercy Unleashed training and also training by the Department of Corrections before being permitted to enter the corrections facility. Background checks and TB tests are also required. and will be provided by the DOC. Past incarceration does not necessarily eliminate you from eligibility to volunteer.
Are you interested in starting a Mercy Unleashed ministry at your church? The discipleship movement inside a prison is exponentially more powerful when volunteers are also participating in discipleship groups at the local church level. Mercy Unleashed can meet with your ministry team to equip them to go inside the prison to minister to the offenders, to minister to the families of the incarcerated that attend your church or are in your community, and to welcome the offender to your church once they are out of prison and reentering society.
